Beams are the horizontal pieces, they connect directly to the uprights. Beams distribute the weight, and are designed to hold several thousand pounds to several tons, PER SHELF! (with proper weight capacities and beam placement). Typical beams range in widths: 96", 99", 102", 108", 120", 144"
